What is a domain name
| A domain name is the address that visitors tou your website will in the address bar of their web browser to access your web site. A mechanism called DNS translates the domain name entered into number (called an IP address) that computers use to share information with each other. The last part of the domain (often called the Top Level Domain, or TLD) is administered by a certain organization. For example, the "com" TLD is administered by ICANN, while the "uk" TLD is administered by Nominet UK. Many web hosting companies include a free domain name as part of their hosting packages, can register a domain in your behalf, or can transfer domains you already own for you. You are not required to have your domain registered with your hosting company. In fact it can be a good idea to have your domain registered with a different company. This may make it easier to change hosting companies in the future. | |
