What are the different types of hosting
| There a essentially five different types of web site hosting available. Shared Shared hosting is where your web site is hosted on a server with other web sites. This can be hundreds or in some cases thousands of other sites. Reseller/multi-account Reseller hosting, or a better description is multi-account hosting is where you can have several of your web sites hosted under one administrative account. This is very similar to shared hosting as most often there will be several, possibly tens, of reseller accounts on one server each account hosting many websites. Reseller hosting is ideal if you have more than one web site to host. Virtual Private Server (VPS) Virtual Private Servers operate much like dedicated servers, but the server is shared by several users, yet each user appears to have full control and access to the whole of the server. VPSs are a good step between shared or reseller hosting and dedicated hosting where more server resources are needed for your web site Dedicated Dedicated hosting is where you rent a complete server from your hosting company. The only web sites on the server will be the ones you put on it. All the server resources are available to you and your web sites exclusively. Operating a dedicated server is a fairly complex technical under-taking. Many dedicated server suppliers will undertake server management for you, at a cost, if you are unable to do this yourself. There are also third party server management companies who can undertake the administration of your server on your behalf. Co-located Co-located hosting is where you own the server, but pay to have it housed, or located at a datacentre where it can be connected to the internet. Like Dedicated hosting, some server administration skills are required. These may be obtainable from your co-location supplier or from a throd party. | |
